Oct 2023: New Moon in Libra & Annular Solar Eclipse

Originally published October 12, 2023 – Archived as part of my Lunar Energy & Astrology content

This month’s new moon will occur on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1:55 p.m. EDT (1755 GMT).

The new moon is a time for manifestation and beginnings. I typically wait to set my intentions for a ritual the day after the new moon, but I acknowledge that other traditions may use it differently.

For me, this moon phase is like a powerful vacuum cleaner that eliminates any last bit of unwanted cosmic energy—a huge, black abyss that is quite cleansing. Like everything in Libra, this new moon encourages self-awareness and equilibrium.

Which aspects of your relationships or life are out of balance?

Which unhealthy behaviors or characteristics need to be released or realigned?

Eclipse energy is amplified; think of it as a super new moon, influencing emotions and generating waves of change. This period can be chaotic if not well managed.

Make use of this "ring of fire," in its entirety or in part, to define the adjustments needed to bring your highest self into alignment. Sunstone and moonstone can help balance these potent energies; carry them with you or place them on your person or an altar. When choosing them, which one captivates you the most?

Fire signs like Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius should use the moon's influence to soothe their fiery inclinations during this time. Water signs, such as Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio, should apply solar dynamics to regulate their emotions and maintain a light and optimistic outlook.

No matter your zodiac sun sign, this cosmic occurrence urges us to consider both the light and the dark (shadow) sides of ourselves. Take out your proverbial magnifying glass and evaluate what improvements you can make until the next moon cycle, which happens as a partial lunar eclipse on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Sun energy is masculine, ardent, bold, fearless, and determined in action. The force of lunar energy is gentler, more creative, and thoughtful.

What creative project or self-care activity have you been considering?

Are you holding back in areas of your life where you should be more authentic or bold?

To reap the full benefits of an eclipse, relaxation, meditation, and contemplation are prioritized. I think it's a good idea to go over your crucial next steps and embrace the transformative power of this powerful event. According to Navajo tradition, an eclipse is a time for new beginnings, completion, rebirth, and resolution.

You can use the upcoming eclipse's magnificent blend of cosmic forces to shed what is no longer serving you and remain open to intuitive nudges of the following steps to consider before taking action. It can be challenging to make a significant change, but these two powerful cosmic influences will support you in making the adjustment.

If you're wondering when and where this spectacular event will occur, here is a great interactive map of the best spots to watch the annular solar eclipse. Due to traditional views regarding this sacred event, all Navajo Tribal Parks will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. MDT on October 14.

Until next time,  let your inner compass guide you. 🧭
